Just tried the mixed paella at Good Rice in the Boulevard and to say we were disappointed is an understatement. Can anyone recommend a decent Spanish restaurant in Playa Flamthat offers authentic traditional paella?

Reminds me of bangers 'n' mash or Lady Chatterley's liver - one never knows.

‘Authentic’ original Valenciano paella consists of rice with green vegetables and sometimes a little chicken or rabbit; it is originally a way for hard working peasants to feed families with very little money.

There are are various other versions- ‘de mariscos’, shellfish, but this is expensive. Mixta is usually vegetables and a bit of chicken as above, with maybe a few mussels, but don’t expect rice stuffed with high quality shellfish or meat - it’s always a lot of rice - the fun is scraping the burnt bits off the bottom whilst drinking a glass of wine and chatting after you’ve eaten it! And NO NO NO - paella does NOT contain chorizo!!!!!!!

Also, authentically, it is never eaten in the evening, only lunchtime.

There are other rice dishes - cooked with black squid ink for example, but they are rarely called ‘paella’ as that is the name of the dish in which the rice is cooked - mainly depends upon the restaurant. It shouldn’t be hugely expensive, but avoid cheap restaurants and it won’t be ‘cheap’.

Hello: I am in Guardamar so I can only recommend here some places I visited few times:

Restaurants Jaime beside the beach. Good paella with good price.

Restaurants Mateo. So great day menu on Sundays with shellfish paella for just 12€(they only work for lunch time)

I disagree with Stephanie on some points (excuse me Stephanie):

It is topical to eat paella at lunch time but you can enjoy it every time you want it, the experience will be good.

Mixed paella is shellfish and chicken

It will be hard to find Paella Valenciana here, in that area you will find Paella from alicante with different and less vegetables

Yes, of course, Ros, you are perfectly free to disagree with me, and I can only speak from what I have learned over the years. You probably know more than me anyway, because from having read several of your posts on here, I think you may be Spanish, or connected with a Spanish family, so you know far more than me anyway!

I have been eating paella in many different places over many years but never seen one like that served up at Good Rices, it tasted like it was swamped in balsamic vinegar to be honest. Maybe it was the black squid ink mentioned but it was not nice.

Could you have ordered it by mistake? I forget the name, but it’s a separate dish.

I Like the los "arroz a banda" that is just rice with squid and cuttlefish. I add allioli that is "valenciano", a lenguage between apanoah and french from this area. "All i oli"="garlic and oli"=mayonese with garlic"

The back paella name is "arroz negro"="black rice", it is similar to "error a Banda" but not "azafran" to pit yellow colour. They add ink from squid.

Quite possibly. The waiter said it was the best one on the menu so we took his word for it. Obviously the Spanish palate is different from the English so will use my own judgment next time!
